The Super Burger Story: From Food Markets to Florida Road Icon
The Beginning (2015)
Our Super Burger journey began in 2015 when a simple yet revolutionary idea took root in Durban’s vibrant food scene. Our concept was straightforward but powerful: if burgers were made with fresh, real ingredients and genuine passion, they would taste better. What started as a pop-up presence at various food markets around Durban quickly captured the hearts and appetites of burger enthusiasts from across our colourful city.
The Airstream Era (2016)
In 2016, we made a bold move that would define our identity. Drawing inspiration from American diner culture, the Super Burger brand acquired a vintage 1956 Airstream food truck and transformed it into Durban’s first and only Airstream burger operation. This wasn’t just about serving food; it was about creating an experience for our customer base. The shiny, iconic Airstream became a beacon on Florida Road, blending American nostalgia with our familiar Durban style.
The Philosophy
From day one, Super Burger has operated on a strict methodology that sets it apart from mass-market burger chains. Every patty is hand-rolled from a proprietary home-made recipe. Our team obsesses over ingredient combinations, burger layering techniques, and the crucial bun-to-beef ratios that make each bite exceptional. This attention to detail transformed a simple cheeseburger into something extraordinary.
The Urban Retro Movement
Super Burger has pioneered what we call “urban retro” dining in Durban. The vibe was deliberately crafted to bring people together, creating a communal atmosphere where food lovers from all walks of life could gather. The philosophy extended beyond just the food to embrace our outdoor eThekwini lifestyle, fresh air, sunshine, and what we call “super vibes with super people.”
Evolution and Expansion
As the burger concept flourished, Super Burger’s passion for food led to natural expansion. We developed the Super Smokehouse concept, embracing American-style low-and-slow cooking techniques infused with African elements to create distinctive “African” burgers and BBQ. This evolution demonstrated our commitment to innovation and adaptation – a key element of being South African, while staying true to our roots.
